Femme Torero II

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973)

The Vollard Suite contained 100 etchings that Picasso created between 1930 and 1937, which the artist selected for this project from his vast array of etchings.

The woman bullfighter, one of the themes explored in the Vollard Suite, dramatizes the tragic unhorsing of a female torero, modeled on Picasso's mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter.

The allusions to anguish, death and the bullfight resurfaced three years later in Picasso's Guernica.
