  • With its twisted trees and rich contrasts of light and dark, this image is the most dramatic of the two to three dozen etchings that O’Conor made in the vicinity of Le Pouldu during the summer of 1893. His rhythmic repetition of the jagged forms makes the trees dance demonically, conveying the force of the winds blowing in from the Atlantic.
  • O’Conor favored wiping his etching plate with a coarse cloth, creating the tonal varieties that enrich the powerful effect of this turbulent coastal landscape.
