St. James Street

James A. Whistler (American, 1834-1903)

Whistler's view was drawn on the spot on his etching plate along St. James Street, running from Pall Mall to St. James Palace in the heart of London. The actual view was therefore reversed in the printing. The result was a direct impression of the scene before him with sunlight eating at the edges of buildings and shadows dancing across the street, unlike his earlier, more realistic etchings.
