Bellows began his career as a newspaper sketch artist and, even after he turned to painting, he confidently relied on his skills as a draftsman. These skills are best appreciated in his drawings and lithographs.

The difference between crayons used for drawings and those manufactured for lithographs was minimal, and Bellows used lithographic crayons for both.
