As was probably all too uncommon in reality, Callot ends his narrative series with the renegade soldiers being apprehended and brought to justice.

The moralizing inscriptions beneath each plate were written by Abbé Michel de Marolles, one of the great print collectors of the age, who owned 1,468 impressions of Callot's prints among the 123,400 in his collection.

Sotheby's, New York, New York, 1987; purchased by Walter and Joan Wolf, Indianapolis, Indiana; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2008.
