野渡空舟図
Blending description with abstraction, in the upper left Gyokudō painted rounded hillocks that barrel upward to a towering plateau, which, in defiance of reality, twists back to face the viewer. Dabs and slashes, blunt-ended and sharply pointed strokes define structure while creating visual rhythm at the same time. His manipulation of ink leads to striking contrasts—dark, wet ink firmly outlines rocks and hills, while feathery, exploratory lines render the trees in the foreground wraithlike and nearly transparent.
Gyokudō was a musician and a poet who did not start painting until in his forties. His contemporaries did not generally appreciate his extremely personal and eccentric paintings, but today he is recognized as an artistic genius.
