Arthur Auguste Mallebay d’Echerac was a French painter and sculptor who also wrote acerbic art criticism under the pseudonym "Dargenty."

Bracquemond’s preparatory drawing for his etching concentrated on d’Echerac’s face and hands, which Bracquemond knew to be the windows into the personality of the sitter from his thorough study of Rembrandt’s etched portraits.
