Purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1980.
In 1871 Moran joined the United States Geological Survey as the official artist on the expedition to the largely unexplored Yellowstone region of Wyoming. His drawings helped lead to the establishment of Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872.
Between 1874 and 1876 the Boston publisher Louis Prang issued fourteen chromolithographs translated from Moran’s Yellowstone watercolors, the popularity of which helped shape America’s fascination with the West.
