This is the center panel of a triptych that thematically is based on a popular novel, the Tale of Genji, but in actuality its main purpose is to showcase beautiful figures. Eishi’s women are statuesque yet willowy, with slender faces, small eyes, and delicate mouths.
Eishi was of samurai stock, and for a while he was in the service of the shogun. He was a sophisticated bon vivant, and his paintings and prints are imbued with elegance.
