Death of the Viscount: Marriage à la Mode, Plate 5

After William Hogarth (English, 1697-1764) Ravenet, Simon François, Engraver (French, 1706-1774)

The young viscount, having surprised his wife and the counselor in their lovers’ nest after the masquerade (the evidence of which is strewn on the floor), has been mortally wounded in a duel. Silvertongue escapes out the window in his nightshirt just as the constable, the watch, and the innkeeper burst into the locked room.

William George Sullivan; given to the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art, in 1930.
