William George Sullivan; given to the John Herron Art Institute, Indianapolis, Indiana, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, in 1930.
The inevitable conclusion of Hogarth’s morality tale takes place in the merchant’s London townhouse, much less grand than Lord Squanderfield’s manor that opened the series. The flyer on the floor records Silvertongue’s last words before he had been hanged for the murder of the husband. The bottle of the poison Laudanum lying alongside tells the rest of the tale. The merchant removes the wedding ring from his daughter’s finger before rigor mortis sets in, the departing doctor is no longer needed, and the apothecary upbraids the servant for procuring the poison for his mistress.
