Scholars At A Lecture

William Hogarth (English, 1697-1764)

The text is “Datur Vacuum” (Leisure time is given), but it is also a Hogarthian pun pointing to the generally vacuous expressions on the faces of the auditors, all identifiable as Oxford undergraduates by their distinctive mortarboards. The reader is William Fisher of Jesus College, Oxford, who posed for Hogarth.

William George Sullivan; given to the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art, in 1930.
