Beer Street

The steeple belongs to St. Martin-in-the-Fields, in what was Hogarth’s neighborhood. The flag is raised on the occasion of King George’s birthday, and the varied denizens on the prosperous corner of London celebrate with generous flagons of good and healthful English beer. Here only the pawn shop is unused and derelict.

William George Sullivan; given to the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art, in 1930.
