Rouen, Distant View

Joseph M. Turner (English, 1775-1851) William Richardson, Engraver (British)

Turner’s distant view of Rouen illustrated the last volume of Scott’s Tales of a Grandfather, which dealt with French history. While Rouen was the setting for several important events in Scott’s narrative, Turner’s view is a contemporary one of the bustling city on the Seine northwest of Paris. He even includes the diligence that traveled the post road between Rouen and the Channel port of Dieppe, in which Turner undoubtedly rode on his several visits to Rouen between 1821 and 1832.
