Gift of Stephen W. Fess and Elaine Ewing Fess
Prints, Drawings, and Photographs
Elaine Ewing Fess and Stephen W. Fess, Zionsville, Indiana; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1999.
Baumann was as much a painter as he was a wood carver and his color woodblock prints reflect the local ambience of his surroundings. The palette for the five prints he made during his brief sojourn in Provincetown tend toward the blues and grays of the weather-beaten seacoast town rather than the lush hues of Brown County that he had just left.
Baumann moved progressively away from the use of blacks in his prints and that ink is totally absent here even in the seemingly black cat at the lower right who gives his name to Tom ahunting. The color is suggested by an overprinting of the dark green and purple blocks.
