Chester

Walker, John, Engraver (English) After Joseph M. Turner, (English, 1775-1851)

In spite of the small format of his watercolor and its like-sized engraving, Turner managed to encompass a panoramic view of Chester with emphasis on the city walls and strong citadel that identified this bastion on the Welsh border.

A glimpse of a sailing barge descending the River Dee to the Irish Sea and a working brickyard are touches of local color that Turner added to enliven the otherwise static view of the city.
