In 1795 Turner journeyed to the Isle of Wight to sketch the rocky, scenic shoreline for a publication envisioned by the engraver John Landseer.
Some event interrupted the project and Landseer abandoned the four Turner plates after he had lightly etched the outlines, but before he had strengthened the lines with engraving.
