In 1962, civil rights organizations conducted sit-ins, boycotts, and demonstrations along the eastern seaboard against the Howard Johnson chain of restaurants, which remained segregated in the South. [new para] Adelman, an independent photojournalist with Magnum Photos, possessed a strong sense of social justice and put his camera at the service of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), becoming the unofficial documentarian of the Civil Rights Movement.
