This photograph was taken near Central Park in the months following the splendid success of Weegee’s book Naked City in 1945. "I found myself in a confident and happy mood. And the way I feel—well, that’s the way I take pictures, so I parked my car and cut the wires of the police radio set in it. I was through with the newspaper game—through with chasing ambulances to scenes of crime and horror . . . Now I could really photograph the subjects I liked—I was free."
