Yoshiwara and Shinagawa were two of the most popular government-sanctioned pleasure quarters in Edo. The Yoshiwara scene shows a courtesan delivering New Year greetings. Captured here are the New Year's snow, pines tied with sacred straw ropes decorating the gates of the teahouses, and the courtesan with her entourage. The bird's-eye view offers a subtle glimpse of the woman and her two young attendants, in brilliantly colored matching robes and oiled-paper umbrellas. The Shinagawa night scene shows the brothel gate in the foreground, palanquin bearers rushing past two women with a lantern, a blind masseuse, and a man in traditional traveling attire. In the misty distance we see the lanterns of fishing boats.
