By 905, six outstanding Japanese poets of the past were venerated as poetic "immortals" (kasen 歌仙). This number grew to 36, and by 1200 it became popular to depict them together with representative poems. In the early 1200s, Emperor Go-Toba (1180-1239) created an anthology pairing the works of 50 ancient and 50 contemporary poets.
Originally part of a handscroll, this portion pits Prince Motoyoshi (890-943), on the right, against Fujiwara Teika (1162-1241), on the left, with three poems each written above.
