岩上孔雀図
A male peacock displaying its plumage is an arrestingly beautiful sight. Native to South Asia and Malaysia, peafowl have spread throughout the world. In 598 the Korean Silla court presented a peacock to the Japanese court. Images of peacocks also entered Japan through Buddhist art.
Using rich green and blue hues, Gantai added gold accents and intricate detailing to capture the iridescent splendor of the feathers. Gantai was the son and successor of Ganku, founder of the Kishi school. The landscape screens by Gantai that are also on display demonstrate the versatility of the Kishi school.
Purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2000.
