歌詩番匠図と大納言公任図
The courtier admiring a waterfall is the exemplary Heian period calligrapher and poet Fujiwara Kintō (966-1041). To the left, workers are constructing the character uta 歌, which means "song" but which also can refer to Japanese poetry. On the right, workers are building the character shi 詩, which is the word used for Chinese poetry.
Itchō was expelled from the Kano school for failing to adhere strictly to its rules of painting, and he therefore looked to the non-elite classes for patronage. His nonconformist attitude even landed him in prison for a time. A poet as well as a painter, his literary bent and his iconoclastic wit resulted in paintings that are suffused with lyricism and gentle humor.
