(Carole Thompson, Memphis, Tennessee); purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, Indianapolis, Indiana in 1995.
From his apartment, Stieglitz looked upon a scene of Old World charm: a rainy day, a tree-lined square, a Gothic church, a hansom cab on a glistening, cobbled street. [new para] Stieglitz was an art photographer and a champion of photography as an art form when many critics considered it a mechanical creature of science. He worked in the "Pictorial" mode—photographs that shared qualities with paintings—producing impressionistic prints in soft, carefully modulated tones. [new para] Camera Work, in which this photogravure was published nearly 20 years after it had been taken, was a quarterly journal founded by Stieglitz in 1902 and devoted to Pictorialism.
