As a pan-Asian religion, Buddhism has inspired great art that reflects the artistic trends of the diverse cultures of the continent. Buddhist art can exhibit a blending of indigenous and foreign styles, tastes, and ideals of beauty. In the rendering of the hair, shape of the nose, and other stylistic features, this head from the Gandhara region of Pakistan demonstrates the Mediterranean influence that followed Alexander the Great into the northern Indian subcontinent and continued to be felt during the rule of the Kushan kings.
