reason
Kjell Wangensteen, Associate Curator of European Art: The rationale for deaccessioning the work stems from its middling quality, its insecure attribution, and condition issues. The attribution of this work to Van Herp is not secure; Frits Lugt gave the work to Van Herp, and Hofstede de Groot to Justus van den Nypoort. The amount of conservation work required for this painting is also prohibitive, given its modest value. The work needs cleaning, due to a reticulated, dull varnish that clouds the surface. The frame is very damaged, and would require considerable attention to bring the overall appearance up to a level where it could be shown in our galleries or loaned to another institution.
