John Milton's epic Paradise Lost, which plays out in the infinite realms of heaven and hell, was perfectly suited to Martin's fertile imagination. To achieve the appropriate sense of mystery and grandeur, Martin chose the labor-intensive process of mezzotinting, which produced far-richer black surfaces than any other printing medium.
