Probably in the collection of Baron Karl Kuffner [1867-1924] de Dioszegh (or Diószeg), near Bratislava, Slovakia; Baron Raoul Kuffner [1886-1961], Castle de Dioszegh.{1} Probably by descent to his widow, the painter Tamara de Lempicka [1898-1980].{2} Elizabeth M. Drey of (Paul Drey Gallery, New York, New York); Edith Whitehill Clowes (Mrs. George Henry Alexander Clowes) [1885-1967] of Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1964; Clowes Fund Collection, Indianapolis; on long-term loan to the Indianapolis Museum of Art since 1971 (C10076); given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2015. {1} Baron Raoul Kuffner’s father was an avid art collector, who left his collection to his son. For more information on the Kuffner family, see the Prefatory Note in Parke-Bernet Galleries, Dutch and Flemish Old Masters, Italian Renaissance Paintings…from the Collection of Baron and Baroness Raoul Kuffner de Dioszegh removed from the Picture Gallery at Castle de Dioszech near Bratislava, sold by their order, 19 November 1948. The IMA’s painting by Mainardi was not included in this sale. {2} Elizabeth Drey refers to the former owner as a woman, and it is known that de Lempicka sold her collection after her husband’s death; see correspondence between Drey and Mrs. G.H. A. Clowes, dated 14 May 1964 in Clowes Archive.
