"Riding a donkey on an excursion when snow falls in the mountains,
The wind from the river swirls around the returning fishermen.
Sheng Maoye executed (this work) for Yanxin, (my) elder poetic brother." [tr. M. Wu]
Two popular subjects of Chinese painting are combined here: a scholar on a donkey in snow and returning fishermen. Both the scholar and the fishermen suggest utopian lifestyles-one of scholarship and official service and the other of withdrawal from worldly affairs and worries.
