Executed with a brush several feet in length and very heavy when laded with wet ink, the character here reads “Cloud.” Shōtei was born Ibata Kimio in Kyoto. He graduated from Kyoto Educational University in 1958. From 1968 to 2000 he toured several countries, including Australia, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States, to introduce the art of shodō (the Way of Calligraphy). From the 1960s on Shōtei worked together with and taught calligraphy to many Western “action painters” and was especially close to Sam Francis (1923–1994).
