Hudibras Catechized

William Hogarth (English, 1697-1764)

At the widow’s house, Hudibras was to describe his promised flogging, but the widow has already learned from Ralpho that not only has it not occurred but that Hudibras has tried to convince his servant of the nobility of taking the beating for him. Thugs disguised as demons give Hudibras a thrashing. He, thinking them demons sent by Sidrophel, confesses.

Purchased with money from the John Herron Fund for the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art, in 1911.
