Hudibras And Sidrophel

William Hogarth (English, 1697-1764)

Hudibras consults the astrologer, Sidrophel, on his prospects of marriage to the wealthy widow. Lying on the table is the horoscope Sidrophel has cast. It is full of unfavorable omens, which causes Hudibras to erupt and deride this “false conjurer.”

Purchased with money from the John Herron Fund for the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art, in 1911.
