Von Stackelberg Family, Schloss Fähna, near Reval (now Talinn), Estonia; {1} Reinhold von Liphart [1864-1940], Schloss Ratshoff (or Ratshof), Tartumaa, Estonia, and by at least 1928 Gräfeling, near Munich, Germany; {2} Emil Paravicini-Engel [1870 - ?], Basel, Switzerland, by 1928 or 1929;{3} (E. and A. Silberman Galleries, Vienna, Austria, and New York) by July 1936;{4} George Henry Alexander Clowes [1877-1958], Indianapolis, in 1937;{5} Clowes Fund Collection, Indianapolis, since 1958; on long-term loan to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Courtesy of the Clowes Fund, since 1971 (C10050); given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2014. {1} See Karl Woermann, “Hans Holbeins d. J. Selbstportrait von Schloß Fähna,” Zeitschrift für Bildende Kunst, volume 10 (1875), pp. 315-318. Woermann erroneously placed Schloss Fähna near Riga, Latvia, which explains all subsequent similar mistakes. The painting is correctly identified as located in Estonia in “Vermischte Nachrichten,” Anzeiger für Kunde der deutschen Vorzeit, volume 20, 1873, p. 117. {2} The restorer and Holbein scholar Paul Ganz informed Abris Silberman that the painting passed from the von Stackelberg family to R. von Liphart and on to Paravicini, see letter dated 24 July 1936 in IMA, Clowes Archive. By 1925 the von Stackelberg and von Liphart families were related by marriage. {3} See Paul Ganz, “Das Bildnis Hans Holbeins d. J.,” Jahrbuch für Kunst und Kunstpflege in der Schweiz, volume v (1928-29) part II, pp. 273 - 292 with illustration, esp. p. 287. {4} See letter from Ganz to Silberman, dated 24 July 1936, as cited above. {5} Note of agreement of purchase, to be affected in 1937, dated 28 December 1936, in IMA Clowes Archive.
