Turner encompasses the entire valley of the River Derwent from Matlock Bridge to the heights of the distant Tor in four-by-six inches—a size that was dictated by the engraving that was to be made from it. Matlock was one of the eight watercolors of picturesque English sites commissioned of the 19-year-old Turner by the pocketsized tour guide, The Copper Plate Magazine.
