Angers basks in warm evening light, which was how Turner first saw it on October 3, 1826, after a day-long steamboat ride up the Loire from the sea at Nantes. The River Maine (just above its confluence with the Loire) flows beneath the medieval ramparts toward the bridge that connects the Doutre district with the central city.
Turner’s sketching tour up the Loire began a thirteen-year project to record all the great rivers of Europe in watercolor on blue paper, which were intended to be engraved and published as picturesque tours.
