Lowestoffe Lighthouse

Joseph M. Turner (English, 1775-1851)

Deep night over the North Sea illuminated by moon glow and the light from the Ness Point lighthouse was an effect easier to achieve with gouache on blue paper than with standard transparent watercolors.

The reproduction of such atmospheric pieces was a most difficult task for a line engraver, but both Lowestoffe Lighthouse and Orford Haven were designed to be engraved; the book in which they were to appear was never published.
