West Window, Worcester Cathedral

Joseph M. Turner (English, 1775-1851)

Having learned how to heighten the grandeur of a building by drawing it from a low vantage point, Turner aggrandized this view by sketching it from the banks of the River Severn in July 1793.

Back in his bedroom-studio above his father's barbershop in Covent Garden, Turner used this drawing as the model for a watercolor now in the British Museum.
