Ellsworth Kelly works with the basics of everyday visual experience: color, shape, and scale. He isolates his unique forms, silhouetting them against the wall to integrate his art with the surrounding architecture—one of his key artistic goals.

Based on a series of Kelly’s lithographs, this translation of form and color into aluminum wall panels was a meticulous process. It required mechanical precision to prevent these shapes from warping, as well as special surface preparation to make the colors match to their original printed hues.

Kelly designed the layout of works in this gallery specifically for the reopening of the IMA contemporary galleries in November 2005.

(Greenberg Van Dorn Gallery, Saint Louis, Missouri), purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1996.
