Commissioned from the artist in about 1640 by Cassiano dal Pozzo, Rome; by descent to his grandnephew, Cosimo Antonio dal Pozzo by whom sold in 1703 to Pope Clement XI, by whom sold in 1714 to his nephew Cardinal Alessandro Albani; from whom acquired for in 1762 King George III and the Royal Library at Windsor; from which sold by George V in 1920s; acquired by Jacob Mendelson, London; Sotheby's New York, January 10, 1995 (165); Private collection, Connecticut; from which acquired by Markham Cain Roberts and James Sansum, New York, New York, by whom given to the IMA in 2013
