Franco Moschino, Designer (Italian, 1950-1994)

Moschino, known for his irreverence regarding the fashion system, pokes fun at one of couture’s most famous designers, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. Using immaculate construction, he imitates the classic Chanel suit but juxtaposes discordant imagery to create a humorous work. The cow, adorned with a ribbon bow in the colors of the Italian flag, was one of the memorable “faces” that launched Moschino’s publicity campaigns.

New York; (Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Chicago, Illinois), 09 March 2008, lot 295; purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2008.
