Gift of Stephen W. Fess and Elaine Ewing Fess
Prints, Drawings, and Photographs
Elaine Ewing Fess and Stephen W. Fess, Zionsville, Indiana; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1999.
Baumann came to Taos in May 1918 at the invitation of two Chicago artist-friends. He was taken by the light and atmosphere of New Mexico, but not by the squabbles of the Taos art colony, which were inconducive to the solitary and exacting nature of color woodblock printmaking.
Days before leaving Taos for his permanent residency in Santa Fe he attended the annual celebrations at the thriving Taos Pueblo. The celebration, uniting Christian and Puebloan beliefs, is held on the feast day of San Geronimo (St. Jerome), September 30.
