Having achieved by 1912 a notable standing among the Impressionist painters of Boston, Benson was able to divert himself to his favorite pastimes of watercolor, ornithology and hunting. He combined these interests in his etchings of waterfowl observed in the salt marshes around his home in Salem, Massachusetts.

Benson’s convincing watercolors and etchings of birds in flight against simple backgrounds of marsh and sky found an immediate audience among sportsmen and print collectors and launched Benson on a second career.
