Matulka used patches of color to define the volume and geometry of these tile-roofed houses (probably in Paris). This approach to painting was inspired by Paul Cézanne.
His family immigrated to America in 1906, but in the 1920s he divided his time between the US and Europe, where he maintained a studio in Paris.
In 1925 he was the first Modernist to be appointed to the faculty of the Art Students League in New York, and the following year, Katherine Dreier organized his first solo show in New York.
