Mars learned to make color woodcuts in Munich in 1904 and made it her specialty once she settled in Paris in 1905 with her lifelong companion Maud Hunt Squire.

Mars’ figurative woodcuts of the Paris street scene have an affinity with the decoratively patterned, “intimist” paintings by the noted Parisian artists Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard.
