This procession of cartoonish humanoids, some in fancy dress, dates to the beginning of the career of Man Ray (born Emmanuel Radnitzky).
Matisse was the apparent inspiration for Premiere Promenade, with his similarly vividly colored, oddly peopled canvases of 1906 and 1907, which Man Ray could have seen in photographic reproductions shown at 291 in 1910.
Man Ray was one of three founders of the Société Anonyme, established in 1920 to promote avant-garde art in the US. The next year he immigrated to France.
