Gallery Labels
Geometrical design and repetitive ritual inspire Michelle Grabner’s shaped circular paintings such as the one installed in this gallery. This work is based on a specific type of spiral defined by the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes.
In an Archimedean spiral, the successive turns are equidistant from each other. Instead of a solid line, Grabner has chosen to paint the spiral with tiny dots, ritualistically applying each dot with a fine brush and reaching for more paint only when her brush was dry. The result is a subtle variation of paint application, with some white dots very opaque and others fainter, producing the appearance of a continuously twirling spiral.
