- Confident and straight brushstrokes build up a roughly-hexagonal landscape that forcefully draws the eye to the center of the composition.
- This image was painted during the summer of 1933, when Spellman traveled from her home state of Texas to study watercolor technique in the coastal artists’ town of Provincetown, Massachusetts.
- Spellman turned away from the commonly-painted harbors of the Provincetown to instead depict a local gravel pit and its surrounding landscape. This interest in geometry and focus on the presence of industrial structures are hallmarks of Precisionist style, which also influenced her work in Texas.
