Katsukawa Shunsho (Japanese, 1726-1792)

沢村訥升 in the role of Nan Yohei 南与兵衛

Yohei is dressed for travel with leggings, a cape, a hat and his sword. His brawny shoulders surround his head. Newly appointed as a constable, Yohei is dismayed to learn the murderer he is pursuing is his stepmother's son, Chōgorō, who was forced to kill out of obligation (giri) to his patron. Torn between duty and his warm feelings for mother and son, Yohei eventually allows Chōgorō to escape.
