"Making Guns" at the Woolwich Arsenal was the assignment given to Clausen by the British Ministry of Information. The Great War series was exhibited in London in July 1917, and the Evening Standard found Clausen's six lithographs "among the surprises of the exhibition," because he had "triumphed with material that might be considered out of his range." Heretofore, Clausen had specialized in painting pastorals of peasants in the Essex countryside.
The forgemen are completely outsized by the massive and menacing hammer, a device used to stamp and press ingots of steel into enormous land and sea guns.
