大橋•あたけの夕立
from the series 100 Famous Views of Edo 名所江戸百景
Vincent Van Gogh owned an impression of this print and made an oil painting of it. It is certainly one of the most visually exciting designs in the series. The "Great Bridge" actually referred to two bridges spanning the Sumida River: the Ryōgoku Bridge and the "New Great Bridge" Shin-Ōhashi (the one pictured here). Slanting lines capture the sense of a sudden rain shower drenching the scampering figures on the bridge.
